The session covered an analysis of the most frequent and most severe claims seen at sailing organizations over the past 10 years (2013 to 2022). We took a deep dive into the top claim types to outline best practices for preventing claims, accidents, and losses. On April 1, 2021 a new federal law goes into effect that requires operators of recreational vessels less than 26 feet in length with an installed Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS) to use the ECOS link in certain circumstances. The cut-off switch or “Kill Switch” is typically a coiled bungee cord lanyard clipped onto the operator's and the other end attached to the cut-off switch. Electronic wireless devices are also compliant. According to this new requirement, the engine cut-off links must be used when the primary helm is not within an enclosed cabin, and when the boat is operating on plane or above displacement speed. Some situations where the engine cut-off link will not be required include docking, trailering, trolling and operating in no-wake zones. The law applies on all "Navigable Waters of the US". Allen (Al) Golden, of Queenstown, MD passed away on Thursday, January 14th, 2021 at the age of 80. Al Golden was the Founder of International Marine Insurance Services (IMIS) which is a part of Gowrie Group. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side. The entire IMIS, Gowrie Group, and greater Jackline sailing and cruising community will miss his blue water stories, insurance expertise, and friendly smile. He is survived by his wife, Eileen Golden (nee Astrin), his children, Gary (Ruth) Golden and Shari Golden (Cyndi Ray), his sister, Carolyn Golden, grandchildren, Amy Drake, Kelley (Kristin) Drake, Elliott Golden, and Alexander Golden, and his great-grandchildren, Saul Raposo, Theo Raposo, Kayley Drake, Amalie Tschirn, and Olivia Tschirn. He was predeceased by his parents, Rose and Eli Golden, and his brother, Howard Golden. A Virtual Funeral was held on Friday, January 15th, 2021. Interment Arlington Chizuk Amuno Cemetery. The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is off to a record start with a surge of early storms and is predicted to continue to be a very destructive and powerful season. Late Tuesday April 21, 2020, CT updated its "Safe Workplace Rules for Essential Employers" to ease mask requirements for employees working in solitary spaces. Employees working alone in segregated spaces such as cubicles with walls and private offices may remove their masks. Governor Lamont of Connecticut, Governor Cuomo of New York, and Governor Murphy of New Jersey, announced that as of 4/18 marinas, boatyards and marine manufacturers in their states will be allowed to open for personal use as long as strict social distancing and sanitization protocols are followed. Chartered watercraft services or rentals will not be allowed and restaurant activity at these sites must be limited to take-out or delivery only. Families First Coronavirus Response Act: Employee Paid Leave Rights. The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA or Act) requires certain employers to provide employees with paid sick leave or expanded family and medical leave for specified reasons related to COVID-19. Through the generous support of over 400 local individuals and companies, the 2018 Gowrie Group Challenge was a huge success – raising $160,747 for The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries. As Hurricane Michael approaches Florida and the Gulf Coast, we want you to know Gowrie Group is standing by ready to help you with advice, storm preparation resources, claims reporting information, and recovery support. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting that Michael will make landfall along the Gulf Coast on Wednesday October 10th as a Category 4 storm. Gowrie Group was incredibly proud to honor Dawn Riley and Oakcliff Sailing as they were presented with the prestigious Mystic Seaport Museum 2018 America and the Sea Award. The prestigious award recognizes those individuals and organizations whose extraordinary achievements in the world of maritime exploration, competition, scholarship, and design best exemplify the American character. The award was presented at a gala fundraiser for the Mystic Seaport at the Metropolitan Club in New York City October 3. Riley stands alone as the first woman to compete in both the America’s Cup and in the Whitbread Round the World Race, two of the pinnacles in the sport of sailing that prior to her had been all but closed to women sailors. Riley also went on to become the first American, male or female, to sail in three America’s Cups and two Whitbread Round the World Races.

Gowrie Group and VFIS are pleased to be hosting an Emergency Vehicle Driver “Train-the-Trainer” Class in Springfield, MA, Oct 17, 2018 . This training will take place during the Massachusetts EMS Conference at the Mass Mutual Center. This course is designed to teach the instructional methodology to potential and existing instructors needed to deliver the following program. The operator of emergency vehicles in today’s society carries a heavy responsibility. The penalty for not adequately training your operators also carries legal consequences. Emergency vehicle operators and the entities they represent have been held both criminally and civilly responsible for their actions. This program was developed to teach the emergency vehicle operator (EVO) proper driving technique, the mental as well as the physical aspects of the driving task. On Wednesday August 15th, Gowrie Group employees served their annual BBQ luncheon to the community at Grace Church in Old Saybrook. Sailing World magazine article "So, the Kid Wants to Teach Sailing," by Kimball Livingston, addresses the current challenge of finding qualified sailing instructors with strong powerboat handling skills. The demand is high and the supply is low. Whitney Peterson, Gowrie Group's VP of Marketing, is quoted in the article, highlighting her views about the importance of hiring coaches that are not only US Sailing Certified Instructors with solid sailing and coaching skills, but that they also have multiple years of experience operating a powerboat. Each year, the employees of Gowrie Group select a local non-profit to donate to on behalf of the company as an end of year thank you gift to the owners and partners of Gowrie Group. For the 2017 gift, Gowrie Group employees selected Bikes For Kids. The monetary donations from Gowrie Group employees will be used to fund bike repairs and purchase new helmets which will be distributed to children for the spring 2018 biking season.
